Summary The new Commission wants to close the gap between Europe and the citizens. We bring to the debate on the future of the Common Agricultural Policy the results of our experiment with three different groups of young people in Brussels and Paris. They were asked to identify and classify the main five achievements and weaknesses of the CAP and to provide another five recommendations to European politicians. Despite the differences between the groups, we observed important convergences on what was the most positive aspect, namely, a common policy which has provided self‐sufficiency in Europe. The most negative opinion concerned a policy which is not targeted at those most in need. In terms of recommended changes, the groups thought that the CAP should be more environmentally friendly, sustainable and democratic; and there was also a need for a rebalancing of the food chain in order to achieve a better distribution of value added within the chain. Surprisingly, some issues that are usually popular in the Anglo‐Saxon world, such as the budgetary cost of the CAP or the need for more subsidiarity and fewer Brussels‐driven instructions, were only marginally present in the debate.
