The green leafhopper, Empoasca vitis Göthe, is a pest of grapevine and other crops in Europe and Asia. The pair formation, here described for the first time, relies on vibrational communication and starts when the female replies to a male call and a duet is established. It then continues through two different behavioral stages: Location and Courtship. The acquired knowledge can be used to develop a vibrational mating disruption technique for pest population control (see pages 869–882). Photo by Umberto Salvagnin.
