Snow cover is an important environmental component which facilitates migration and as a stage of sexual behaviour for some aquatic Chironomidae of a winter emerging strategy. A community of at least 35 species active on the snow was found during a long‐term study of adult non‐biting midges in temperate areas of Poland. The fully‐wings as well as brachypterous forms were documented to swarm on the snow and use the searching mating behaviour within some narrow temperature range of mid and late winter.
