This study demonstrated the effect of delays in disposition on overall ED functioning and overcrowding by mapping bed‐level occupancy and then simulating the effect of removing disposition delays. By deriving and then applying an ED bed cost per unit time we were able to show that this lost bed capacity is likely to represent a large overall cost to an ED.
