A field study of over 400 project managers, including 159 associated with new products, concludes that 14 factors are especially critical for successful project implementation (such as new product RD&E). These factors are:Clear mission, goals and direction Top management support Detailed schedules, specs and resource plans Active client consultation Qualified personnel Available technology and expertise Client commitment Project tracking and control Effective communications among teams, client and management Identifying and handling unexpected problems Leadership Favorable power structure and politics Favorable work environment Project importance and urgencyThe significance of these factors regarding project success varies depending on the stage of the project in its life cycle. Recognizing the nature of factors critical to project success helps managers to focus their attention and efforts. It also helps to identify the skills needed by project leaders for effective role performance.
