The environment of history‐writing has always been governed by the school and university curricula, research, hopes of a general readership, and the requirements of politics. These have been framed by the English language community, the publishing industry and, more recently, the media market. To this Scotland added, after about 1960, an unprecedentedly active politics, culminating with the grant in 1999 of broad powers of self‐government. In this History has been both resource and instrument, and is correspondingly complex.
