Spontaneous preterm birth (PTB) remains one of the pressing problems of modern obstetrics. Allen and Corner first isolated progesterone and proposed the name because of its pro-gestational activity (Allen 1930). Progesterone prolongs pregnancy via a range of actions in the myometrium, cervix and placenta which, when exploited pharmacologically, might delay or even prevent PTB.
