A case‐study using interview and observation investigated on‐the‐job training in manufacturing companies to consider the implications for personnel professionals. The findings were that training was undertaken by peer colleagues who had received very restricted trainer training, and the training was wholly outside the oversight of personnel professionals. Developments were proposed which, while they would apply primarily to the case‐study organisations, might well be appropriate for more general implementation.
