This article outlines the preliminary results of a longitudinal research study undertaken over a 12‐year period (1986–97). It charts the evolution of S/NVQs in terms of both achievements and failures. On close scrutiny, it appears that the S/NVQ system has had a limited impact upon the competitiveness of the British economy. Its value and significance to the skill base of the economy remain unproven.
