In this article Anna Vignoles reports the results of a recent research project which evaluated the effects of class size and expenditure per pupil in secondary schools on students’ academic performance and their subsequent earnings. Controversially she concludes that simply providing secondary schools with more resources is not likely to improve student outcomes, although increasing class sizes dramatically would almost certainly have a negative impact. The implication of this research is that attention should be focused on identifying the characteristics and management strategies of successful secondary schools.
