This article examines the fantastic display of treasure recounted in the Encomium Emmae Reginae. Particular attention is given to the literary traditions and sensibilites, both Latin and the vernacular, which govern the Encomiast's representation of treasure. Treasure emerges as a complex, changing and powerful symbol in eleventh‐century Anglo‐Danish England.
