The aim of this study is to investigate the use of English in English newspapers published in Korea. This paper presents a report on a corpus‐based investigation of the use of English in Korean English newspapers: modals which express meanings associated with volition and prediction; and prepositions which denote spatial relations that are believed to be the result of contact with Korean. The use of computer corpora in this study has the advantage that they can easily be shared and thus subjected to a wider range of studies, avoiding the over‐reliance on intuition found in many approaches. Based on this corpus‐based approach to the use of English, we examine the use of English in Korea and show some aspects of the nativization of English as the result of contact with Korean.
