This paper outlines a framework for the analysis of the spread of English in the expanding circle. It is organized into eight parts: (1) scientific research; (2) the business world; (3) the internationalization of culture; (4) the internationalization of the marketplace; (5) education; (6) codemixing and borrowings; (7) attitudes towards English; and (8) language policies. Even though it is mainly the situation of English in France that is analyzed here, it is hoped that the framework will be applied to other contexts and provide a basis for analysis of the situation of English in national contexts.
