This article explores connections between the organization of domestic space and the contrasting political traditions of two closely related neighbouring peoples, the Tallensi and Mamprusi of northern Ghana. House design reflects major differences in the organization of labour and leisure, and separates residents by age and sex in very different ways. These variations on a common pattern reveal characteristic contrasts in political ethos.
