Following Dwivedi and Gupta's study of group work with teenage boys in the previous article, Theresa Tierney and Rose Dowd describe their use of group work to help girls with emotional difficulties. As educational psychologists, they were keen to develop group work as an intervention schools could continue themselves and which would also be a good use of resources and provide an opportunity for staff professional development. The groups ran in three secondary schools and involved a total of 20 girls, identified by their teachers as unhappy and/or friendless. They conclude that while social skills group can be effective in providing support for young people, schools need continued support to develop the confidence to run them successfully.
