Anne Aylett records the response in her school to concern about the possible underachievement of more able pupils. She describes her anxiety as a member of the learning support team about the introduction of setting in mathematics and English, particularly in its effects on the self‐esteem and motivation of pupils placed in lower sets. Her study sought to elicit the responses of pupils and teachers to this change, and its findings and conclusions provide some thought‐provoking comments on an ever‐debatable issue.
