Jane Yeomans carefully reviews the importance of early reading skills, focusing on sequences of development. A useful figure summarising skills and behaviours is provided. The implications for pupils with special educational needs is given some prominence and she concludes with observations on the context within which support should be given. This article can be usefully read in relation to the previous one by Greg Brooks.
