Alison Bearn and Colin Smith look at the commitment of mainstream subject teachers to special needs pupils, a still relatively unexplored area. Through questionnaires and detailed interviews, they extract information that confirms that ‘territorial boundaries’ and other factors continue to inhibit support teaching. They conclude that teacher attitudes and possible antipathy remain stubborn stumbling blocks to the implementation of whole‐school policies.
