The taxonomy, history, habitat and cultivation of the Madagascan endemic Phaius pulchellus var. sandrangatensis Bosser (Orchidaceae) are discussed. Illustrations and a full description of the variety are provided and the variability of the species is considered. Its position within the Phaius‐Gastrorchis complex is outlined.
