This paper examines the causal association between share ownership and attitudes of New Zealand managers, using Long’s (1978a) theoretical framework. The results of the longitudinal study showed that: (1) pre‐existing attitudes had no causal effect on the decision to purchase shares; and (2) employee share ownership did not result in the expected improvement in attitudes. Reasons as to why the scheme had little effect are discussed.
