There is considerable interest in the use of internet-based teaching in higher education, but a survey of the literature has revealed few publications which compare quantitatively the effect, on student attendance and performance, of internet-based teaching and traditional methods. I have developed extensive internet-based support for several taught modules on our science degree courses, and I have had the opportunity to assess the effect that such support has had on the performance of students taking the modules. The aim of this article is to present evidence, from one such module, of its beneficial effects.
