One can find numerous examples of course material delivered via the World Wide Web (WWW), but there are far fewer examples of systematic evaluation of such resources or of any attempts to harness the power of the medium to obtain information about the student learning process (Roth, Woszczyna and Smith, 1996). One such study (Wilson and Whitelock, 1998) monitored the behaviour of distance learning students, and found that over half of the students remained on-line to the end of the project. A high proportion of students did download additional course material which was provided.
