Heather Murdoch, Lecturer in Special Education at the University of Birmingham, suggests that the repetitive or stereotyped behaviours displayed by many severely disabled children, and which often cause concern to parents and educators, may be used as part of an educational development programme. This programme might focus on developing the child's social and/or exploratory skills, depending on the behaviours shown and the individual's perceived educational priorities.
