The prevalence of civil wars—and the massive human and economic costs that they impose—has attracted the attention of many scholars, including economists. This article briefly introduces three strands in the economics literature on civil war—causes, consequences and solutions—and identifies potential gaps in the existing literature which may be useful to students who are keen on pursuing further research on the subject.
