We provide an overview of the challenges, risks and opportunities experienced by Australia ' s liquefied natural gas industry over the past 25 years. This includes an evaluation of the cost competitiveness challenge of the sector, the importance of effective public oversight and regulation to attract investments and progress developments and the need for community trust. We find that an effective and fair fiscal regime and regulatory process, a trustworthy and transparent process of approvals and monitoring that effectively manages risks are necessary to maximise the national benefits of liquefied natural gas developments .
