Using selected paintings as examples, I propose the importance of Nash’s autobiography Outline to an understanding of his work. Through the perspectival figure of anamorphosis I explore the use of conceptual and perceptual distortion in Nash's painting and writing, concentrating on narratives of retrospection, identity and representation. I claim that Nash was aware of the disruptive aspects of his autobiographical and critical narratives, and that his writing formed an integral part of the metaphysical ‘equations’ that his work set out to solve.
