The International Court of Justice: Advisory Opinion on the Chagos Archipelago

On 25 February 2019, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) delivered its advisory opinion on the legal consequences of the separation of the Chagos Archipelago from Mauritius in 1965. The ICJ Advisory Opinion found that the process of decolonization of Mauritius had not been lawfully completed and that the UK is obliged to end its administration of the Chagos Archipelago. This article considers the implications of the ICJ Advisory Opinion for self‐determination, Mauritian decolonization, the Chagos Marine Protected Area, the US military base on Diego Garcia and Chagossian resettlement.
