Standard definitions of culture demand that we understand the church as a culture. However, if the church is the body of Christ in the world, then Christ is a culture. This recognition can be understood through the doctrine of the totus Christus , and offers a way of understanding the relation of Christ to Israel in the scriptural narrative. It also illuminates, variously, the practice of intercessory prayer and the question of ‘church–state’ relations.
