Cover image: A sea cucumber ( Cucumaria frondosa ) rests on a boulder in a typical suspension‐feeding posture, looking deceivingly sluggish. A study showed that unfavourable conditions, such as high conspecific density, low salinity or high turbidity, can trigger the rapid intake of seawater, enabling sea cucumbers to achieve neutral buoyancy and drift or tumble away like living balloons. Such findings challenge the notion of sedentarity in benthic animals, with implications for worldwide management and conservation of commercially and ecologically significant marine species (see pp. 820–832).
