Some animals, like this Calomela leaf beetle (Alan Henderson, Minibeast Wildlife), are so shiny that they appear almost mirror‐like. It has been suggested that a mirror‐like appearance improves survival by reflecting the surrounding environment and reducing detectability. Franklin et al. 2021 (doi: 10.1111/1365-2435.13963 ) tested this hypothesis by conducting field experiments with mirror‐like and diffuse replica beetles. They found that human participants showed no difference in their ability to detect each replica beetle type and that bird predation events occurred at a similar rate for both replica types. These results suggest that a mirror‐like appearance does not improve survival by enhancing background match.
