Cover image: A Columbian ground squirrel emerges from its burrow after a late spring snowfall in the Sheep River provincial park, Alberta, Canada (photo credit: Juliette Rabdeau). In this issue, Viblanc and colleagues investigated the relationships between maternal investment into reproduction and maternal oxidative stress in female ground squirrels that breed using daily energy income (see Viblanc et al., pp. 722–735). They found that maternal oxidative stress appeared neither to constrain female investment into reproduction, nor result as a major cost of reproduction. Breeding females, however, increased their antioxidant defences compared to non‐breeders prior to lactation, suggesting they may mount an oxidative shield in anticipation of this costly period.
