Brain sections of hippocampus and fimbria area were obtained from 15‐week‐old ZrchI Prnp ‐/‐ mice previously infected with 600 pfu/mouse of EMCV‐B on post‐infection day (DPI) 7. Sections used in the TUNEL method were counterstained with hematoxylin and eosin. CA1 pyramidal cells in the hippocampus of Rikn Prnp ‐/‐ mice showed apoptosis.
