Roman Catholics with a 1960s worldview used “justice and Peace” as a powerful single expression, almost as a hyphenated word. The end of the cold war and a new consciousness of intrastate armed conflict worldwide intensified the focus on peace‐building within the Catholic Church's missionary community. In this new orientation, a wide “inner‐outer” understanding of peace is proposed. The peace‐building effort is shown to be too important to leave to politicians and diplomats. It must be the work of “multi‐tracks” of society. Exploratory peace‐building research suggests both a critique of long‐established forms of religious peace‐building and new opportunities.
