The United Nations University for Peace in Costa Rica was established by the General Assembly in 1980. Over the past two decades the university has explored a number of innovative approaches to peace education, including actively working to create a culture of peace throughout Central America. Unfortunately, inadequate funding has limited its ability to become a fully fledged academic institution. Once financial stability is achieved, the university has the potential to become a major center for graduate peace studies in the Americas.
