Based on his personal experiences with preparing specifications, the author defines the objective of a specification and lists particular problems that may arise when confusion of purpose exists. Guidelines for drawing up a specification are then presented. Finally it is emphasized that communication between provider and client is the most essential factor in achieving a successful specification.
