Validity and Reliability of the Turkish Version of the Shriners Hospital Upper Extremity Evaluation in Children With Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy

ABSTRACT Background The Shriners Hospital Upper Extremity Evaluation (SHUEE) is a video‐based tool designed to assess spontaneous functional analysis, dynamic positional analysis and grasp and release abilities in children with various diagnoses. The aim of this study is to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of SHUEE in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy (CP). Methods The study included 23 children with hemiplegic CP, aged 6–15 years. The reliability of the scale was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) for inter‐rater reliability and Cronbach's alpha for internal consistency. Hypothesis testing for construct validity was assessed using the Children's Hand‐Use Experience Questionnaire (CHEQ) and ABILHAND‐Kids, comparing SHUEE scores based on gender and the affected side. Results The inter‐rater reliability of SHUEE was found to be excellent, with ICC values ranging from 0.927 to 0.981. Cronbach's alpha was 0.759 for the total SHUEE score. Hypothesis testing for construct validity of SHUEE was confirmed through significant correlations with CHEQ and ABILHAND‐Kids ( p < 0.05). Also, the analyses showed no significant differences in SHUEE scores based on gender or the affected extremity ( p > 0.05). Conclusion The Turkish version of SHUEE has been demonstrated to be a valid and reliable assessment tool. This study supports SHUEE's effectiveness as both a clinical and scientific measurement tool.
