Photonic integration technologies, which have been developed since the deployment of optical communications, are essential for increasing the network capacity at a low cost and with efficient power consumption. This paper reviews recent progress on photonic integrated devices for higher bit-rate and long-distance transmission technologies with advanced modulation formats.
