THE PRINCIPLE of the theta pinch, borrowed from the field of plasma physics, has been applied to a new type of solid-state laser pump. Properly implemented, the theta pinch, or plasma pinch, offers a number of advantages as compared to the conventional electrode-discharge flash lamp pumped laser.
