Aiming at the problems existing in the distribution network, such as the difficulty in extracting fault signals and the difficulty in diagnosing various faults, a fault location method based on Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD) multi-scale fuzzy entropy is proposed. In order to solve the existing problems of confusing identification of traveling wave heads and inadequate fault feature extraction in complex distribution networks, the VMD algorithm is used to decompose the fault transient signals into a number of Intrinsic Mode Function (IMF) and quantify the complexity and regularity of different mode components. Meanwhile, the fuzzy entropy values of the signals at different coarse-grained scales are calculated separately to determine the appropriate mode components and accurately calibrate the transient signals, and the effect of the method on the calibration of the wave heads in different noise environments is compared. The simulation results show that the proposed protection scheme has strong reliability and high accuracy. It can accurately identify the traveling wave signal under different levels of noise in the distribution network and has a certain anti-noise ability.
