The title compound, 3C9H15N2Se+·I3−·2I−, was prepared by methylation of the selenadiazole with methyl iodide. The asymmetric unit is composed of three independent selenadiazolium ions arranged in layers and connected via I3−·(I−)2 anion layers. The distances between the iodine and selenium atoms are significantly shorter than the nitrogen-to-iodine distances
