A criterion to estimate the reliability of powder pattern indexings, based upon information theory principles, is proposed. It takes account of the individual discrepancies between computed and observed line positions, of the unit‐cell volume and of the systematic extinction rules due to the lattice type. The resulting figure is in fact the information quantity conveyed by the set of indices assigned to the given experimental lines.
