In order to study the nucleation process in recrystallization, the orientation relationships between the deformed matrix and the new crystals for the case of single‐crystal Al elongated at 78 K have been established. The coincidence relations determined experimentally have been reproduced with hard‐sphere models for the single Rowland transformation and for what is called a `double Rowland transformation'. The single Rowland transformation is analysed in terms of a military transformation: it is the product of a pure shear (Verbraak transformation) and a rigid rotation. The orientation change resulting from a double Verbraak transformation can be described by either a 34° rotation about an axis close to 〈112〉 or by a mirror plane close to {153}.
