The following 70 papers and abstracts stem from the 'Jfilich meeting' summarized below by Professor Schmatz and Dr Wilkens. They are arranged in the order of the related oral presentations. They do not, however, constitute a proceedings for several reasons. No effort was made to get all speakers to submit manuscripts and many chose not to do so. Their presentations are represented only by abstracts, all of which were reviewed after the meeting and many of which were revised or extended by the authors at that time. The contributed papers were all subjected to the normal refereeing process of the Journal. As would be expected, not all have been accepted for publication. The rather delicate matter of screening invited papers was ably handled by Professor Schmatz and his colleagues, for which efforts the Editor is particularly grateful. The Editor further expresses his appreciation to Professor Schmatz for having organized this meeting which left the participants enthusiastic about it and for his considerable editorial assistance in the collection and subsequent handling of the papers and abstracts.
