When a small single crystal used to study a displacive structure transformation transforms completely, the plane which is then held parallel to its original orientation is the crystal surface in contact with the mounting. Because a displacive transformation produces some change morphology, this plane in general does not bear a known relation to the required orientation relation between coexisting lattices. Examples of appreciable observed and calculated shape changes are illustrated and include the transformation face‐centred cubic to simple cubic.
