The intensity ratio of the 004 to the 002 diffraction line, I (004)/ I (002), was measured for graphitizing C atoms, non‐graphitizing C atoms, carbon blacks and a neutron‐irradiated carbon. The values of I (004)/ I (002) are different for different C atoms even when they have the same interlayer spacing d 002 . For example, at the same value 002 = 3.40 Å, I (004)/ I (002) is about 0.80 for a graphitizing carbon, while only about 0.45 for a non‐graphitizing glass‐like carbon. Carbon blacks have values between graphitizing and non‐graphitizing C atoms. The ratio I (004)/ I (002), as well as the interlayer spacing, is a useful parameter for characterizing the structure of C atoms.
