Miscommunication in a healthcare setting can be deadly, and language barriers between nurses and their patients can be a major factor. Having the ability to communicate with non-English-speaking patients strengthens communication and trust between a patient and nurse and helps prevent medical errors. This article discusses why nurses should pursue this valuable skill and how to start.
