not available.\udINTRODUCTION: "...Total laryngectomy, performed for the first time in\ud1873, had a slow diffusion because of the initial excessive\udmortality, morbidity, and low cure rates. From 1920s to\udthe 1940s, the use of laryngectomy was restricted to small\udintrinsic cancers of the larynx, and radiotherapy gained\udfavor in the treatment of advanced extrinsic cases. The\udhistory of radiation therapy in the treatment of laryngeal\udcancer is similar to the history of laryngectomy: the firsts\udattempts were disastrous.\udIn 1924, an advanced extrinsic laryngeal cancer was\uddiagnosed in the eminent Italian composer Giacomo Puccini,\udwho had suffered sore throats for several months. He\udunderwent radiotherapy in Brussels, one of the first centers\udin the world applying this new method. The famous\udcomposer died during the treatment....
