Relationship in Broccoli Between Genetic Mapping and Small Molecule Profiling Using NMR Spectroscopy

Broccoli was analyzed using both genetic mapping and small molecule profiling by NMR spectroscopy. 125 separate families of a broccoli population were utilized for the analysis. Broccoli families were analyzed using NMR spectroscopy to obtain small molecule profiles. These profiles were generated by quantifying a number of compounds in over 600 broccoli spectra. The profiles were compared to genetic mapping data generated for each broccoli family to determine possible QTLs (quantitative trait loci) associated with variation in the small molecules detected. Variation in some sugars and amino acids ranging up to 15% could be accounted for by genetic variation and traced to certain QTLs.
