Wound healing has an important impact on ventricular remodeling and functional recovery after myocardial infarction (MI). Nature naphthoquinone shikonin has been shown to promote wound healing by reducing reactive oxygen species and inflammation. However, it is still unknown whether shikonin can increase wound healing in infarcted hearts. C57BL6 mice were subjected to MI surgery. Infarcted mice were treated with shikonin by oral gavage, 25 mg/kg once a day for four weeks, or the equal volume of vehicle as controls. At the end of the experiments, echocardiography was performed. Echo study showed that shikonin improved left ventricular fractional shortening and ejection fraction, and that it decreased left ventricular dilation and increased infarcted wall thickening. Moreover, the ratio of heart weight to body weight was decreased in shikonin‐treated group, compared with vehicle group. Masson's trichrome staining demonstrated fibrosis was inhibited in non‐infarcted regions in shikonin‐treated group. Taken together, shikonin promoted wound healing and improved left ventricular functional recovery in infarcted hearts.
