In this era of increasing antibiotic resistance, the antibiotic pipeline has failed to keep up with the need for new agents. While many factors contribute to this gap, the scientific challenges of discovering new antibiotics play prominently. Further, at one time, genomics promised to revolutionize the antibiotic discovery process; however, this promise has yet to come to fruition. We will present a novel strategy that marries chemical biology and genomics in the service of antibiotic discovery and demonstrate the power of such a strategy to identify new antibiotic candidates.
